Managing a smallholding can be a tough job as there are many things to consider and do. But, if you have the right tools and know-how, it can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
In this article, we discuss the four most useful machinery for small holdings and we provide tips for how to manage your smallholding throughout the four seasons of the year.
Smallholding machinery
Let’s take a look at the garden machinery that’s needed for an effective and efficiently run smallholding. We will also discuss which tools are best for the different seasons.
Our online store has a range of smallholding machinery but here’s our pick of the bunch when it comes to making life easier (and more enjoyable!):
Ride-on mowers:
Cutting grass can use up a huge amount of time which is where collecting ride-on mowers can help. By using one of our lawn tractor mowers, you can save a huge amount of time, providing you with more time to do other tasks on your smallholding. We also sell non-collecting ride-on tractor mowers.
We recommend considering zero-turn ride-on mowers for a better cut and to start cutting your grass from early March.
Regular grass cutting helps to keep the lawn in a healthy condition and it’s best to keep the lawn at a consistent height of around 2-4 cm. Zero-turn ride-on mowers ensure that you have a superb, even cut including in areas that traditional lawn mowers can’t reach.
Hedge trimmers:
A hedge trimmer is one of those tools that, if used frequently, can save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Branches and hedges that aren’t trimmed regularly can quickly become out of control - leading to more work and more complex tools such as hand and chainsaws to cut down larger branches and entire sections of a hedge.
Smallholding trailers:
Whether it’s collecting hedge trimmings and grass cuttings or transporting goods, including animal feed, a trailer is an indispensable tool to have on your smallholding. Trailers are useful any time of the year, including the winter and spring months when more maintenance and preparation tasks are being done. Tipping trailers are especially useful as they help to empty the trailer of any grass cutting you might have after using one of our fantastic lawn tractor mowers.
Quad bikes:
A lot of time and effort can be wasted on a smallholding when getting from one side of the land to the other and having a quad bike is a great way to travel - as well as to transport small items. During the winter, quad bikes are also useful as the terrain can be challenging to navigate and quad bikes are built to travel over bumpy or challenging surfaces.
Quick tips
Throughout the year, various tools should be used depending on the tasks that are needed.
Garden machinery such as chainsaws, for example, are useful in the autumn and winter when large branches might have fallen, while lawn tractors, leaf blowers and lawn scarifiers, are more useful during the summer months.
