The ultimate guide to winter lawn mower care
How to store your lawn mower over winter
When it comes to making a lawn look beautiful, a well-functioning lawn mower is arguably one of the most important tools you can have. In this guide, we provide you with great advice on how to look after your mower, how to store a lawnmower over winter and how to look after a lawn during the colder winter months.
When should you cut your lawn before winter
Making the last cut - Before storing away your lawnmower for the winter, you might want to cut the lawn one last time. Typically, the season for cutting the grass comes to an end in October with a possible final pre-winter cut in November.
If the weather turns dry and your lawn looks like it needs it, give it a final high-cut. Just pick a dry day and make sure the ground is firm before starting to mow. Otherwise, show your mower some love with a good clean and service, then put it away for the winter.
For the final cut, it’s best to raise the lawnmower rotary blades for a longer finish and if possible, cut the lawn when it’s very dry so that you can pick up any fallen autumn leaves as well.
How to look after your lawn in winter
Protecting your lawn - Winter can be harsh and can really put a strain on your lawn. Once the last grass cut is made, we recommend a small amount of lawn care treatment. Your lawn will benefit significantly from a dose of Lawn Fertiliser that’s high in phosphate, potassium and trace elements. This blend of ingredients is professionally formulated for applying in the winter months and is proven to give your lawn the care it needs. Make sure that the lawn fertiliser you use can also be used if the ground is frozen or if there is a hard frost as sometimes these treatments won't work if the temperature is too low.
How to store a lawn mower
Nobody wants to waste time and money fixing a lawn mower that wasn’t stored away properly during the winter months. It’s important to make sure that your lawn mower is looked after properly before storing it away.
In order to function properly, lawn mowers require care and here are some tips for preparing your mower for storage:
- Clean it fully, removing any bits of grass that are stuck, especially in wheels or the blades
- Dry the mower to avoid any corrosion or damage during storage
- Remove and store any battery separately. Preferably in the house in a safe place away from children
- Repair the lawnmower if necessary and ask our repair shop to help you
- Consider a full winter lawn mower service by professional lawn mower repair and service centre

How to look after a lawn in winter
During the winter months, you probably won’t need to use your lawnmower, but this doesn’t mean your lawn doesn’t need caring for. Moss will continue to spread throughout winter and, if left untreated, it will quickly kill off large areas of grass. To keep winter moss under control, apply Moss Destroyer or Weed, Feed and Moss killer every 4-6 weeks. Winter lawn care advice for garden maintenance
